For this special edition of Fashion Week, we’re asking successful women about how they manage their careers and lives during this difficult year.

When Jin Soon Choi moved to New York City from Olympia, Washington, in 1990, with just $400 borrowed from her sister, she immediately went to work at the now-closed Korean-owned Sun Nail Salon on the Upper East Side. Delivering handicrafts and slippers to their homes, she earned the nickname “Bicycle Gene” by riding her bicycle to their apartment. One of these clients, beauty director Andrea Pomeranz Lustick Cosmopolitan At the time, Choi was introduced to the agency Marc Edwards Inc., which launched her into the editorial world.

In the year In 1999, Choi opened a boutique nail spa in the East Village, the first of four in the city, and in the years that followed, she established herself as a master in the nail art world. Since then she has worked with brands such as Revlon, CoverGirl, L’Oréal, Maybelline, Sally Hansen, Mac, Sephora, Louis Vuitton and Michael Kors. Her work is distinguished New York Times Magazine, Harper’s BazaarAnd Vogue; And he worked with the likes of Irving Penn, Marc Jacobs and Amy Smilovich. In the year In 2012, Choi launched her eponymous nail-lacquer line, which now graces shows at New York Fashion Week.

Choi – who lives in Soho with her husband John (who is the engineer behind each spa) and their three cats, Choco, Bonbon,
And Consuelo – is one of the most sought after nail artists in the fashion industry. So it’s no surprise that her fashion week schedule is packed and hectic. Let us in on how you do it.

An average day at Fashion Week:
I don’t mind working late, but I hate getting up early. Being a night owl, I sleep until two or three in the morning. If I have a shoot in the morning or a 10 am show, I get four or five hours of sleep. In between my last show at 8 pm, I also have photo shoots – I had a Lanvin photo shoot yesterday. If I don’t have any shows, I get up around nine because I usually go to bed at 2 or 3 in the morning because I have a really good assistant who I trust and if there’s an overlapping booking, I send her to the test shoots. So we kind of share. If there is no overlap, I go for everything.

I’m not used to sleeping early; I can’t sleep early. I try, but I can’t get used to it. Occasionally, I might take a nap if I’m too tired on a shoot. I have worked with this team for a long time. We know each other well so they put a couch in the beauty room and sometimes I lie on the couch for 30 minutes.

On the most stressful parts of the process:
My schedules are handled by my agency, but fashion week is the worst. I have so much to do, and it’s so hard to run. Sometimes things change at the last minute, but generally we try to make an appointment at least two days in advance. My agent puts it all into Google Calendar, and reminds me.

Getting my team together is also stressful. I have about 15 people in my group. i want to know This person is good with this person and this style is good. I try to put the right people in every show.

Keeping her stamina:
By now, I know which shows won’t have food and which ones will. I eat before I go home. I eat lots of fruit and oatmeal. I try to bring an energy bar or fruit in my purse or wallet. I bring some quick snacks and coconut water and orange juice. It gives me instant energy.

turning around;
I have big bags so I can’t take the subway, so I take Lyft or Uber.

On her back uniform:
I’m not stylish. I’m more casual and comfortable. I wear a t-shirt and jeans. My travel shoes are Nike sneakers because I have to walk and move around a lot. Comfort is number 1 on my mind. People think the backstage is very attractive, and it’s not. Sometimes we have to sit on our toes, and I have to make sure I wear something comfortable. I wear funky tie-dyed tops.

On her routines from Fashion Week:
I don’t have time for anything. For skin care, I still do K-beauty steps but no masks, no extra self care. No exercise. There is no meditation. I have to focus on preparing for my fashion shows so I can’t focus on other things. I know when this is done, I can go to the massage; I can go on a rowing machine, a treadmill and a bike. I know you’ll be there after fashion week. If it wasn’t fashion week, I’d be doing the treadmill and jumping rope.

Unloading:
I love K-variety shows like comedy shows. Another thing that helps me a lot is watching cat and dog videos on my Instagram Reels. That really relaxes me and makes me feel happy and let go of my stress. Many cats are very smart. They are better than humans.

When there is help at home;
My husband takes care of the cats. I work from home so I don’t have any buddies for the gin rush line, so I have a home office, and one of my cats is always with me, but I can’t do that when I’m gone. Fashion week. I think they miss me; They go when I have to go early, Mom, where are we going? I just saw it In the mind of a catSo I tried to train Consuelo. She’s not very good in general, but she can be when it comes to food.

Skipping Commitments:
I’m actually a pretty responsible person, so I can’t do this to any designer. I can’t do this to anyone. Although I don’t like the look or the color, I can’t leave them at risk. We can talk about it next season, but I can never come. Even if I am sick and dying, I must go.

On what makes a successful fashion week:
No. 1 is no drama with my team. Also, the work is done smoothly. If something goes wrong, it’s not fun. If it’s an hour before the show we still have models to work with, that’s not good. My heart started pounding. Nail polish needs to dry, and I don’t want to paint while they’re in line. I want to do the work before they line up for the event. I want everything to go smoothly and smoothly as planned without any delay or drama.
