Filipino designer Michael Cinco knows how to put on a good show. And, for the Spring/Summer 2023 show at Arab Fashion Week in the Dubai Design District on Thursday night, he brought the mystique of ancient Egypt to the Emirates.

Against a backdrop of swirling images of ankhs, statues and ancient tombs, Cinco casts intricately ornamented golden figures. The first was a sweeping men’s kaftan, light and flowing and covered in art deco-style geometry, followed by another men’s look with a box top covered in a rich linear pattern. Also seen were the blouson jacket and sharp-shouldered suits for men.

The womenswear was equally decadent, shaped into geometry that echoed sophistication. The Great Gatsby. The gold continued with a stunningly fitted, floor-length sleeved, sheer dress dotted with golden lines.

Next came menswear, with elegant menswear positively dripping with glitter, and as wide women’s jackets with oversized drop shoulders and storm collars. Above all, sharp-cut trousers and a full mesh jacket paired with a golden bra reflected the attitude, while Cinco’s familiar gown was given a new twist under a silk coat.

Many skirts reached almost completely back to show off the ability to cut, such as a fit with large blocks on the shoulder, for men, Cinco flexed its sartorial muscle with cropped duster coats and even elegant drop shoulders. Caps over old gold-plated cropped pants.

As a clever interlude, a model took to the runway and began reworking her dress, first as a headscarf, now tied on one shoulder, then in a loose bolero, a smart move aimed at customers looking for versatility, before the show changed. On to the second half, the color palette is now blue and silver.

After long shift dresses, open backs and ruffled details (smartly hidden by colorful body panels – this guy knows his market), casual wear followed.

There were beautiful tulle frills that were draped into flowers and sewn into the neckline, or blue feathers formed into a full and flowing train.

Long beaded opera gloves and a gold lame mini dress with a frilled train worthy of a famous nightclub Studio 54. The best of all was the way it was treated with such elegance, for example, a large crinoline dress with a padded bustier and beadwork Cinco is famous for.

For the finale, Queen Nefertiti herself is resurrected, dressed in a robe with a three-meter train and encrusted with many beads, which is a delight to behold, showing why Cinco is a force to be reckoned with.
