Michelle Volpe: University of Pennsylvania Health System COO

Michelle Volpe has been named the new CEO of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS) after 23 years as CEO of Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC).

In her new role, the CEOs of each of Penn Medical’s six hospitals will report to Ms. Volpe, and she will be responsible for efforts to further increase operational efficiency and program integration at the 3,400+-bed health system based in Lancaster. , Pennsylvania, to Princeton, New Jersey, including three hospitals in Philadelphia. Together, the hospitals provide care for patients, including more than 18,000 children, during more than 6.5 million outpatient visits and approximately 130,000 inpatient admissions.

During her tenure as CEO of Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, Ms. Volpe oversaw critical projects including the opening of Penn Medicine’s University City Outpatient Center, the relocation of Penn Medicine’s Level 1 Emergency Center from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania to PPMC. A highly respected leader among her healthcare peers, Ms. Volpe currently serves as Chair of the Hospital and Health System Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), which supports more than 240 hospitals in the Commonwealth. She has been a member of HAP’s Board of Directors since 2016 and served as Treasurer before becoming Chair.
