Michigan Tech falls short of No. 9 Bemidji State, 1-0

Houghton, Mich – The Michigan Tech football team came away with a victory over No. 9 Bemidji State on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 4) at Kerley Stadium.

Despite the Huskies leading in most statistical categories, the Beavers could not overcome a 1-0 deficit in the first half as they earned their first win of the season.

“Today was a great success for my team,” said head coach Bulut Ozturk. “It’s something that can really help us and I’m really proud of them. There’s a lot of promise and I’m really encouraged going forward. We played the full 90, giving everything we had and leaving it all on the field. That’s all you can ask for as a coach.

Michigan Tech falls to 2-2 as the Beavers move to 1-1-1.

The Black and Gold outshot Bemidji State 26-5, including a 10-3 shooting streak. The Huskies also had more chances on corner kicks, with 10 on the day compared to the Beavers’ two.

The only goal of the tournament came in the 20th minute when Sarah Wendt headed Megan Majewski’s corner kick into the back of the net.

Senior goalie Gracie Vanlangevelde made 3 saves on the day and the backline once again did a fantastic job limiting opportunities for the opposing offense.

Five total Huskies scored, led by Taylor Noble’s four. Haley Ruiter and Molly Bolang each had two goals, while Alicia Shatrow and Kiersen Korinek each had one.
