HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – Presentation Week at Michigan Tech University (MTU) had one of the largest class sizes the university has seen in decades.

This year’s orientation theme is Track 2 Success, which reflects MTU’s aim to help students find their own way.

The week is packed with a variety of activities for students, including Friday’s favorite tech routines.

“We’re going to have a dunk tank and bouncy houses and a slide,” said Victoria Ghazal, 2022 orientation training coordinator. “There’s an opportunity to have a variety of events throughout the school year all rolled into one day and give you a taste of everything Tech has to offer.”

About 1,400 new students have entered campus since today, and a total of 1,600 are expected by the end of the week.

“Last year we had about 200 or so,” said Dawn Corwin, assistant director of orientation and transition programs. “So this is the second largest episode since the early 80s.”

By the time registration ends, orientation staff is ready to handle them.

“We’ve been able to meet all the groups and people we can study with and learn from,” continued Ghazal. “We’ve built our teams with core experts, so we’ve been able to bring together all of our chemical engineers and all of our computer science specialists, and it’s exciting to have a large class coming this year.”

And with the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, students can look forward to more opportunities.

Ghazal added, “It’s because the numbers of COVID are coming down. “We’ve been able to open a lot more things on campus and bring back some of the events we’ve done in the past. A lot more opportunities to hang out with people on campus and not worry about different restrictions.

Orientation Week is followed by the University’s Welcome Week, which includes additional events.
