MORGANTON, W.Va. – On September 8, 2022, all 55 West Virginia counties are joining together to host the largest free naloxone (Narcan) distribution day in the state. In its third year, Save a Life Day includes every county for the first time and Mon Health System hospitals are participating. A statewide map of over 150 events is available at savelifew.org.

Saving a Life Day is made possible through the support of the WV Office of Drug Control Policy, which provides Narcan for statewide events. Key logistical support comes from the Charleston School of Pharmacy and the WV Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health. This year’s major sponsors include Aetna, Ayuda Medical, CareSource, CAMC Foundation, Community Connections, Unicare and the WV Drug Intervention Institute.

West Virginia lost an average of two family members to fatal overdoses each day in 2021, an average of more than three deaths per day in 2020. This improvement is due in part to the expansion of free naloxone programs to include Save a Life Day events. It started in 2020.

The theme of Lifesaving Day 2022 is “Meeting people where they are”. Rescue Day events are getting a larger portion of naloxone by focusing distribution in high-risk areas and partnering with people who use drugs.
