HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) – Students had the opportunity to explore seven different career paths in health care at the University of the Mountain Center (UCM) Health Care Conference. Risk Society and Technical College.

“They had to pick the top three to attend and they’re rotating,” said Tammy Duff with UCM.

More than 60 high school students from Perry Central, Hazard, Buckhorn and Cordia attended. Students had the option of choosing from geriatrics, physician assistant, medical laboratory science, pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry, and medical school.

“I think pharmacy is very popular,” she said. “Of course they had to make a pill like that.”

The conference helped students decide which careers they like the most and which ones they don’t like as much as others.

“Learning what you want,” said Helen Brenti with UCM. Keeping your financial aid on track so you can stay in the classes you need so you don’t waste your financial aid.

Pam Cornett is a practice manager and dental hygienist with UK North Fork Valley Community Health Center in Hazard. She spoke to students interested in dentistry at the conference.

“I think the biggest thing you have to do is to embrace the fact that anything is possible,” she added.

She said that there is a special need for dentists in our region and she said that she would like to see students who go to college return home and go to work.

“Our people have faith in our people, they trust our people, so they are more comfortable with our people,” she added.
