The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards kicked off on Sunday evening, with stars including Lizzo and Blackpink hitting the red carpet for the big night.
Compared to Hollywood awards ceremonies, the VMAs often see attendees let loose and show off who they are, typically opting for fun, edgy or experimental outfits over formal balls and balls. Fashion history has also been made here, like Lil’ Kim’s one-sleeved purple jumpsuit and seashell nipple in 1999 or Lady Gaga’s famous meat dress in 2010.
Held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, this year’s event featured the likes of Bad Bunny and Nicki Minaj, with Jack Harlow and LL Cool J hosting. Celebrity fashionistas had plenty to celebrate as their style darlings, including Taylor Swift, Lil Nas X and Becky G, stepped into the show-stopping ensembles.
Many stars donned the black equivalent of this year’s “black carpet” — though they also brought fetish-inspired accessories, such as singer Dove Cameron’s thick leather tees or pops of color, like Sabrina Carpenter’s rainbow jewelry.
Celebs including stars Ashley Graham, Tat McCrae and Blackpink’s Jennie all dared to bare their midriffs. Anita and Maneskin’s Victoria De Angelis, meanwhile, paid clear homage to Lil’ Kim’s famous 1999 VMAs with fashionable nipple covers.
Some of the people of the night also came out. And gender-fluid fashion brought some softness to the menswear collection, with Maneskin’s Ethan Torchio wearing a current, Conan Gray strutting in a lace train Harris Reed suit and Bob the drag queen rocking a white dress, which he matched. A plaid blazer and waistcoat.
