Mushroom fashion at Stella McCartney’s Soho store – WWD has a NYFW moment

Surprise, surprise – a mushroom moment and the conversation continues with Stella McCartney.

Although the designer wasn’t present, the biotech company Bolt Trades brought together a group of fungus inventors at their Soho store this week for a fun-filled discussion about fungi.

An in-store event on Tuesday celebrated the commercial release of the Frame Milo collection — with its glittery mushroom decor and accessories like the Flabella bag, pants and pants, and the Frame Milo bag (which retails for $3,500 and sold out online after the June drop). The collection uses bolt threads of mylo material from a mycelium or fungal root-like system, as a bio-based alternative to skin.

McCartney has had a partnership with Bolt Threads since 2017 and has produced 100 business bags in Mylo material to date, not including the clothes that appeared last year.

A panel discussion on mushroom innovation moderated by Julia Gall featured experts from a variety of fields, including Bolt Creeds Vice President of Product Development Jamie Bainbridge, Andrew Carter, founder of mushroom farm Smelhold, Tonya Papanikilov, founder of medicinal mushroom company Rainbow, and herbalist chef Tara Thomas.

“We don’t know how to grow most of the fungi that are out there…we feel that the next frontier of discovery is not just food, but materials,” Carter said. “It seems to fit in with any industry out there. Another thing that always amazes me is how excited people are about this. [that] People wear mushroom t-shirts and go to mushroom fashion events.

Indeed, a fashionable crowd gathered to learn more about the innovators behind the first Mycelium luxury bag to hit the market.

“The most exciting part of food, I find, is that you can change the texture of the sweet, the sweet, the texture. Especially with plant-based foods; [mushroom is] It’s because he has the kind of body that’s the star of the show,” Thomas said.
