At Belgian brand Namacheco, there’s a commitment to flipping themes, not just designs we’ve seen before. Alongside creating mixed images, the brand has long been a force for reinvention. Like its previous collections, the brand’s latest Fall/Winter 2023 walks stand on the same platform – offering new design perspectives on long-standing styles.
Namacheco creative director Dylan Lure directs his vision to the decade-old grunge aesthetic born in Seattle in the mid-’80s. But since its genesis, the style has not only evolved, but has been transported to a global audience – twisting and turning with each new cultural addition. In the spirit of stylistic progress, Lure’s latest Namacheco presents a mixed grunge style. Aptly titled “Medieval Grunge,” the collection draws its energy from blending heritage styles and modern imagery with a punk flair.
Outerwear such as coats and jackets are seen in both single- and double-breasted constructions with decorative embellishments, double-breasted details, asymmetrical constructions and multi-button fastenings. But this is just the beginning. Knitwear tops in warm coral and crisp gray were drawn together across the chest, revealing jackets or long-sleeved shirts underneath. Such faux-refining notions are paired with monochromatic acid-wash denim and shiny pointed-toe leather boots – perfectly capturing the belly-podge feel of grunge styling.
For the brand’s “Tabula Rasa” SS23 show last summer, various design details included curved drapes, long lines, and deconstructed creations. Both clothing construction and styling are similar here by combining these elements. Asymmetrical dresses and one-shoulder pieces are paired with printed knit bodysuits, while others feature mixed fabrics and unusual design pairings. Regardless of the style of clothing, the approach of art, craft and modern class came out to play – adding to the discussion of how far grunge can be taken.
