HAVERHILL — Nashoba Tech’s offense has stolen the show through the opening two weeks, averaging 32 points in wins over South Shore and Tri-County.
But Westford School proved its defense was real during Thursday night’s 12-8 loss to Whittier Tech football.
Down by just four points with 2:13 left, Nashoba Tech saw Whittier take over at its own 25. Nashoba’s (3-0) defense dominated on downs, allowing the Vikings to run out the clock.
Whittier scored the only touchdown in the first quarter, but the visitors scored twice in the second quarter. With 4:30 left in the half, quarterback Murphy Senecal threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Montesanti.
With 22 seconds left in the second quarter, the Vikings had a fourth down at the 2. Badly put the ball on the ground, but Cole Carrier’s interception made it 12-6.
A great goal line position kept Whittier out of the end zone in the third quarter. NT returned the ball to the goal line, but a runner struggled in the end zone for a Whittier safety, making it 12-8.
Montesanti had a solid game on defense, intercepting a pair of passes, including one in the end zone in the pregame undefeated run by first-year head coach Dan Kelly. Nashoba has allowed 26 points in three games, 6 of which came in the last minute when the game was decided for a long time.
