New Mexico Tech announces Hydrology Center, Deju University home

SOCORRO, NM – The purpose of New Mexico Tech’s new National Center for Hydrology Innovation to improve understanding of water resources and the management of these resources was announced today. The university officially opened the Hantush-Deju National Hydrologic Innovation Center on Friday, September 23, 2022, at the Raul and Shari Deju University House on campus during a morning inauguration ceremony in an afternoon ceremony.
Named for alumni and philanthropist Dr. Raul Deju and his wife, Shari Deju, Deju University House is a 5,200-square-foot facility on North Campus with the capacity to host alumni events, meetings and training sessions. .
Located in New Mexico Tech’s research and development department, the Hantush-Deju National Center for Hydrologic Innovation is named after Dr. Raul Deju, a business leader and author who is an early graduate of New Mexico Tech’s hydrology program. . Dr. Deju was a student of the program’s founder, the late, internationally renowned hydrologist Dr. Mahdi Hantush.
“I’m excited to bring this new center, the Hantush-Deju National Hydrologic Innovation Center, to life, and I’m excited that New Mexico Tech will lead the next phase in planning a process to better use the water system of our Earth’s water resources,” said Dr. Deju. “
New Mexico Tech President Stephen G. Wells thanked Dr. Deju and his wife, Shari, for their tremendous support of the university home, the site of the two ceremonies, as well as the vision and drive behind the Hydrology Innovation Center.
“The Hydrology Center will be a new organization at Tech, developing new tools that are important not only to New Mexico, but to the entire world, and conducting research aimed at answering fundamental questions related to hydrology,” he said.
Keynote speakers at the day’s ceremonies included New Mexico Lt. Gov. Howie Morales, U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (NM-1), Dr. John Wilson, professor of hydrology; Dr. Bremah Apambir, Senior Assistant to the President for Global Sustainability and Director of the Global Center for Water and Sustainability at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada; and Dr. Daniel Stephens, Interim Director of the Hantush-Deju National Center for Hydrology Innovation.
