Recommended covid-19 bivalent boosters for children five and older

Posted on October 12, 2022 Covid-19, News section

HONOLULU – The Department of Health (DOH) recommends the covid-19 bivalent booster shot for anyone five years of age and older. Bivalent boosters are the first Covid-19 vaccines designed to protect against early-stage Covid-19 and the most common strains of Covid-19 in Hawaii, the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subtypes.

Subtypes BA.4 and BA.5 account for almost all cases of COVID-19 in Hawaii.

“This is great news for parents who want to keep their little ones safe. Bivalent boosters are prepackaged for everyone 12 and older. Now children ages 5-11 can benefit from these new incentives,” said State Health Director Dr. Elizabeth Char, FACEP.

Today, the US Food and Drug Administration granted emergency use approval for a bivalent booster manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech for children 5-11 years of age and a product manufactured by Moderna for children and adolescents 6-17 years of age. Shortly thereafter, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the DOH recommended dual boosters for people five and older.

The new bivalent vaccines should be given as a single booster dose to those who have previously completed the first series of Covid-19 vaccines and received one or two booster doses. Bivalent boosters can only be given if at least two months have passed since a person’s most recent vaccination.

People can choose to be boosted by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, regardless of the vaccine brand they’ve previously received.
