The plates – No. 13 Georgia Tech volleyball (8-2, 1-0 ACC) swept Wake Forest (8-4, 0-1 ACC) for its first conference title and coach. The Yellow Jackets used an emphatic finish to claim the first set, but overwhelmed the Demon Deacons in the next two sets, doubling their lead 50-26 in total.
In his sixth season in the white and gold, Tech outscored Wake Forest in nearly every major category. In particular, with the Demon Deacon hitting percentage close to 0, the Yellow Jackets held their advantage in kills (39-25), assists (38-25), hitting percentage (.277-.075) and digs (47-34). .
Georgia Tech had a balanced attack on the night as four Yellow Jackets finished with eight or more kills, with two middle-ranked blockers maintaining hitting percentages above .400. Erin Moss (.412) and junior outside hitter Tamara Otten (.571). Otene finished with nine digs to go along with her eight kills, and Moss led the team with three blocks. Other highlights include the top liberos Paula Pimentel The junior set with a match-high 17 digs Bella D’Amico Organizing the crime with 32 assists.
Top outside shooter Julia Bergman He also made an impact with eight kills, 10 digs and a season-high four aces. With those aces, the Brazilian Bomber is tied for sixth in program history with 145 career hits, surpassing Margaret Gaels (1986-89) with 143.
How did it happen?
The Yellow Jackets used a four-point run to jump out in front, creating the first break in the first set, 10-4. The Demon Deacons were able to pull back to within 13-12, but the White and Gold used a similar run to widen the gap once more, 17-12. Wake Forest came back to cut the Yellow Jackets’ lead in half at 18-16, but Tech rallied one last time, taking seven of the last eight points to close out Bergman in a 25-17 first set victory. The third ace of the set.
The Jackets dominated the Demon Deacons to build a double-digit lead at 14-4 heading into the second set. Tech maintained a double-digit lead from then on and Bergman’s fourth ace gave the White and Gold a 25-11 lead to take the lead in the set.
Georgia Tech stepped forward as a graduate middle blocker in the third set Breland MorissetteAC added his third three-point burst of the day to move the Jackets in front, 10-6. Tech continued to maintain its distance, later scoring five points out of six opportunities to push ahead 20-12. The white and gold close the game in the same way, taking five of the last six points to achieve a double-digit victory in September three, 25-15. The sweep will be the first of the season in conference play for the Jackets.
