Philadelphia Health Department announces temperature advisory for first week – CBS Phil

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Dangerously hot temperatures will remain in the Philadelphia region for the start of the work week, prompting the city’s health department to issue a heat advisory. The Heat Advisory is in effect Monday, 12:00 PM and until Tuesday, 9:00 PM.

Monday’s high will climb to 96 and Tuesday will see a high of 94.

Health Commissioner Dr Cheryl Bettigole said: “The Department of Health is declaring a heat health emergency as temperatures rise, putting vulnerable people – particularly our elderly neighbors and family members – at greater risk of becoming ill or dying from heatstroke.

PCA Heat line It will be open on Mondays from 12:00pm to 11:59pm and on Tuesdays from 8:30am to 8:00pm. Hours and days of operation may be extended in the event of a heat health emergency.

These libraries will operate with extended hours on Monday, August 8, 2022 and Tuesday, August 9, 2022. Cooling Center locations and hours are subject to change if a heat health emergency is extended.

Refrigerated buses

The City of Philadelphia has partnered with SEPTA to make air-conditioned buses available to the public on the following routes:

  • Germantown Avenue and Allegheny Avenue, 19133
  • Wyoming Avenue and Rising Sun Avenue, 19120
  • Broad Street and Snyder Street, 19145
  • 70th Street and Woodland Avenue, 19142

Buses are available to the public on Mondays from 12:00pm to 7:00pm and Tuesdays from 11:00am to 7:00pm.

Masks, hand sanitizer, water, and information about heat safety and utility assistance programs are available on buses. The press is not allowed inside refrigerated buses to allow residents to cool down in a private space.

Pools and sprinklers

Residents are encouraged to visit any of Philadelphia’s parks and recreation areas and pools. Pools offer free swimming during open hours for heat health emergencies.

Older adult centers

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation’s older adult centers will remain open. Older adult centers are all air-conditioned and open from 9 am – 6 pm.

The Office of Homeless Services has declared a Code Red effective Thursday, August 4, 2022 and will take proactive steps to protect Philadelphians experiencing homelessness. If you see someone on the street in need of shelter or other homeless services, call the outreach team at (215) 232-1984. Call 911 if there is a medical emergency.
