Philadelphia Phillies star Bryce Harper pitched his first at-bat since returning from a left thumb injury.

The Philadelphia Phillies have been without Bryce Harper for almost two months after suffering a broken left thumb with a pitch. Phillies fans knew a comeback was imminent after seeing his rehab resume last week. Then, interim manager Rob Thompson announced – Harper will return on Friday, August 26 in Philadelphia against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Phillies fans gave Harper a rousing, standing ovation as he stepped into the batter’s box at Citizens Bank Park.

Bryce Harper made most of his first at-bat back from injury

Harper’s first at-bat had a chance to make an impact, as the bases were loaded with no outs. On a 2-2 pitch by Bryce Wilson, Harper singled to right field, allowing Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins to score, giving Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.

In late June, Harper was hit in the left hand by a pitch thrown by Blake Snell of the San Diego Padres. He then suffered a broken left thumb and underwent surgery.

This past week, Harper made his rehab stint with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley IronPigs. His short stay was successful. He hit two home runs in one game, and recorded a double with a walk, both against the Atlanta Braves’ Triple-A affiliate, the Gwinnett Stripers.

Harper is back, and at the right time, the Phillies will look to use the offseason to get their first postseason start since 2011.
