Shelena Raquel remembers taking the leap to invest in her company after a prayer while she was pregnant with her second child.
In the year In 2013, she will return to school at American Intercontinental University’s Atlanta campus, where she will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in fashion marketing and design. After a lot of hard work and suffering, Raquel was able to open Queen Esther’s Diary in 2015, hoping to bring comfortable fashion and healthy living to the Euclid community.
Queen Esther’s Diary is a pop-up shop located in the Coastal Cultural Center at 291 E. 222nd St in Euclid. It works to create unique and comfortable fashions as well as herbal medicines to improve the health of customers.
“Queen Esther’s Diary is about women’s fine clothing, but with the fashion items I create, my focus is on their sensibilities. I remember that a lot, not just how they looked,” Raquel said. “It’s about the look of fashion and how they look aesthetically, but also how they feel when you wear the fabric. I host a combination of imported but designed to suit the needs.
While on the journey to build the shop’s range of herbal soaps, Raquel says she researched commercial soap brands that often use harmful chemicals that can damage or dry out the skin. As a result, she began researching alternative soaps that have a healthy effect with natural ingredients.
“Each soap starts with herbs and what the herbs are used for. I think a lot about what I put on my skin and sell because every ingredient should be beneficial to the body,” Raquel said. “People forget that anything you put on your skin gets into your bloodstream within 15 seconds. Our skin is the largest part of our body, and we need to give it the care it needs; what you put on your skin and what goes into your skin is important.
“The soap I create can cover a variety of health issues, from anti-fungal to helping with heart issues.”
The store has several versions to choose from, from Frankincense & Myrrh Soap, which has antifungal properties, to Root & Boaz Soap, which helps dry out dry, chapped skin, says Raquel.
Raquel says her faith is intrinsically tied to what she does in her business and her main goal is to help people find their own way in life. Also, the name of her store was inspired by the biblical story of Queen Esther.
“People who have used my products have told me that our soap has cured them of their ailments, which is great to hear,” she says. “My goal is for people to find inspiration through my store to fulfill their God-given purpose.”
