For years, Patty Ludy worked at a daycare center.
Now she helps run the Rooster Farm Pumpkin Patch outside Johnsburg.
“My husband (Thomas) and I have been wanting to do a pumpkin patch for the past few years,” Ludi said. “My 11-year-old son (Brodie) thought it was fun too. We’ve planted pumpkins before, but we’ve been talking about wanting to get a pumpkin patch, so we thought we might as well give it a try. So we jumped in.
The Luddies are running a business that not only has six acres of pumpkins, but also lots of activities for kids of all ages, such as a corn maze, a 20-foot double tube slide, duck races, a bounce house, and a petting zoo. and corn pit.
“We’re hoping to sell a lot of pumpkins and have a lot of families come out and have a good time,” Ludi said. This is what we do with our family. We love working together and doing everything together, planting and growing things and helping families get out and have fun, enjoy activities and spend time with loved ones.
Rooster Farm had a grand opening on September 24th. Buell resident Katie Nichols and her family were the first customers to arrive at the pumpkin patch at 9:17 a.m. The first 100 customers received donuts.
“I was really excited about it,” Ludi said. “It’s a lot of work, so I’m emotional. Hopefully, it will be worth it.
The family-owned business is named after Brody’s nickname, Doroster. He received his nickname from his grandfather.
“It’s great,” Brody said.
Ludi said she hopes Brody will continue the family business when he grows up.
“My son hopes it continues and we continue to do it every year,” Patty said. “What he wants to do when he grows up is to lead this and be a farmer and a planter.”
Rooster Farm is located two miles east of the Montgomery County border at 30903 Honey Locust Road.
“We have 10 acres,” Ludi said. “My mother and mother-in-law live down the road and all our family lives around us. My husband’s mother and father owned it all. Then they split it up. All the family lives here now. That’s how it started. We built here about 12 years ago. My husband has lived here all his life. My husband and This is where the family grew up.”
The Rooster Farm is open daily from 9 am – 7 pm until October 31. Admission is $8 and children 2 and under get in free. The business has about 15 employees, most of whom are friends and family members.
“We couldn’t have done it without them,” Ludi said.
Rooster Farm sells gourds and many varieties of pumpkins such as regular orange, white and black, and mini. Ludi said she and other workers spent all summer planting and pruning pumpkins and making sure there were no bugs on them.
“Every day over the summer we’ve been working really hard and making sure everyone is where they need to be,” Ludi said.
