SCDHHS and UofSC partner together for youth mental health

Columbia, SC (WIS) – The South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services is partnering with the University of South Carolina to create the School Behavioral Health Academy (SBHA).

The program provides teachers and staff with South Carolina How schools can support the mental health of their students.

“The resources announced today will help schools better support them by integrating mental health services into their daily routines. And, along with SCDHHS’ efforts to encourage more counselors to provide mental health services in South Carolina schools, will support increased access to these essential services for children across the state.” said SCDHHS Director Robby Kerr.

Officials said staff will be trained in creating safe schools, crisis response, science-based counseling approaches and whole-school approaches to preventing mental health and behavioral problems, among other topics.

Staff from the UofSC help train and support schools to improve mental health for students through online and in-person teaching.

SBHA is supported by a $3.2 million grant from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS).

of SBHA It offers two online certificate programs in school behavioral health that offer continuing education credits and content tailored to the roles and needs of students, including those who are not formal mental health providers.
