Sure enough, “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” is a Marvel superhero series about Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) – aka Bruce Banner – cousin, Jane Walters (Tatiana Maslany), after accidentally giving her her own green alter-ego in a car accident. Later. Being a woman, she is used to controlling her inner anger and emotions on a daily basis. So, she becomes a reluctant superhero — and her “She-Hulk” body becomes public information.
There are cringe-inducing supersuit displays, constant MCU Easter eggs and surprise cameos, like (the real) Megan You Stallion stomping in pink Balmain, Wong (Benedict Wong) crooning to “This Is Us” and Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox). Take a walk in the morning. But the fourth wall-breaking comedy created and written by Jessica Gao is also an action-packed adventure. Fashion– Focused lens, thanks to costume designer Anne Foley.
Foley knows a thing or two about superheroes: she’s worked on Marvel’s “Agents of Shield,” “Alternative Carbon” and the upcoming “Masters of the Universe.” Ahead, the series’ costume designer looks back at the fashion seasons in “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” and shares behind-the-scenes facts about the small screen’s best-dressed superhero.
Jane / She-Hulk

According to instructions from her new boss at GLH&K, a popular superhuman law firm, Jen has to deal face-to-face with clients (and colleagues) in She-Hulk mode. But finding the right fit proves a challenge until Luke Jacobson designs her high-tech dress.
“I wanted it to be a nod to the color scheme in a joke like purple,” Foley said. It was made by Luke Jacobson, our in-house Edna Mod.

Behind the scenes, designing Jane-to-She-Hulk’s wardrobe required a team of artisans, starting with Marvel’s head of visual development. Ryan Meinerding, who designed She-Hulk’s height and muscle. Then, 6-foot-5 actress Malia Arrayah joined as an on-set reference to Jane’s much-discussed, CG-enhanced She-Hulk; Foley created a body mold from Arrayah and the actress to accurately portray Jane’s closet appearance to She-Hulk.
The jewel-toned office skirt also serves as a tutorial for the big reveal of the supersuit, drawn by concept artist Jackson Seth.

She-Hulk (literally) bursts onto the scene during a heated battle with Daredevil, sporting a purple and white figure of Andy and a top. The futuristic armor-like panels are printed with a special “iridescent ink” with a foil coating on top to create a 3D-like depth. Foley’s team — including garment manufacturing pioneer and tailor Marilyn Madsen — hand-stitched each stretch knit panel onto the supersuit.
“[The supersuit] It feels like the character, and it feels powerful,” Foley said. “That’s one of the great things about the show: There are so many badass women. [involved]From directors to [executive producer] Even Wendy Jacobson and our cast. One of the most inspiring things about working on the show is being surrounded by all these wonderful, wonderful women and telling this wonderful story.”
Of course, there’s the Jane/She-Hulk gown, which has its own backstory, starting with Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) and sneaker lawyer Pug (Josh Segarra) trying to keep the service alive. For the heroes, Luke Jacobson (Griffin Matthews) has a very unique costume. With her elegant butterfly waves blowing in the wind, Jane debuted the dress as she hit the carpet at the gala to celebrate her “Female Lawyer of the Year” win. Alas, Jane and her designer gown go viral for other reasons in the worst episode.

Behind the scenes, Foley gets her own in-demand backstage designer from episode director Kat Coiro, who wants something special for Jane’s big reveal.
“[Coiro] “She had a relationship with Zuhair Murad from her previous shows, so we reached out to him and he graciously accepted this great job to design a dress for She-Hulk,” she says.

Luke Jacobson’s impeccably dapper three-piece suits—featuring his signature high-waisted, double-breasted waistcoat (or coat, American)—are, appropriately, custom. “I wanted them to be unique. I wanted them to look off the shelf,” Foley said.
For inspiration, her own unique aesthetic references costume designers Edith Head and Eiiko Ishioka, as well as fashion legends Rei Kawakubo and Chitose Abe, who looks to Sakai Supersuit designer Edna Mode for inspiration. Also, Foley added: “There’s a bit of Tom Ford in the glasses.”

She collaborated with English-speaking couture star Joshua Kane for the look’s full suit of luxurious silks and wool suits, often with fairy-tale prints. Kane also designed the mint green three-piece suit that Matthews wore to the “She-Hulk” premiere in August.

When Jane is hired by GLK&H, she brings along her paralegal, best friend and constant fashion influence in Nikki. “They’re little fish out of water,” Foley says.
While helping Jane with her difficult cases, Nicky regularly breaks the office dress code, with a Veronica beard and a yellow Septa dress by Alex Perry and a gold lamb sleeve top from Gani with bright pink blazers. Behind the scenes, Foley and Gonzaga bonded over their deep knowledge and enthusiasm for acquisitions.
“I found my match in Ginger as an online store,” says Foley, who supplies a wardrobe of affordable designer resale items from Recess LA for a label that can be purchased by paralegals. “Nicki tries to figure out how to be smart about it and still look like a fashion icon,” says Foley.
Mallory

Jane’s absurdly beautiful and confident partner, Mallory (Renee Elise Goldsberry), holds her personal life close to the vest. Not even the super cute Nikki can get her to drop a cup of tea outside the office as they celebrate their latest legal victory. A favorite of Roland Morette, Victoria Beckham, Alexander McQueen and Meghan Markle, Safia Mallory’s uniform body-con sheath dresses intimidate and dazzle in the office and on the court.
“What she wears to work, it’s her personal armor,” says Foley, citing her favorite black and white graphic print Acres dress (above).
As Mallory, the show-stealing and Tony-winning actor in “Girls5Eva,” would suddenly burst into song, Foley was excited to meet Goldsberry.
“The last time I worked with Renee was on ‘Altered Carbon,’ and she was in tactical gear and body armor,” she says. “It was a dream of all of us to put her in these wonderful and wonderful dresses.”

At Fashionista, we – especially Lisa and I – are Huge Fans of Josh Segarra. Like the lawyer character Augustus “Pug” Pugliese, Lance is from “the other two”, but Lance is more academically inclined and passes the bar: both are pure-hearted and supportive friends, major hypebeasts and post-pushers when it comes to their professional wardrobe. .
“I wanted it to be a little different from that corporate environment as well,” Foley says of the pug’s natty, woolly three-piece suit aesthetic. “But I didn’t just want it to be a normal vest. I thought this guy has a little flair—he needs to mix it up a little.”
Shockingly, Pug’s suits are not custom, but rather a supply of suits from a Dutch direct-to-consumer brand. “Everything had a little texture, whether it was a windowpane or a nailhead on his suit,” Foley said. It’s no surprise that the two groups have been helping Jane since finding out.
“I love the whole ‘broker’ story,'” Foley says with a laugh. “It’s great. Someone tagged me on Twitter saying it’s me. Real Drop broker for ‘She-Hulk.
Titania

It’s branding. Critical She uses legal means for social media content creators, especially a (super)power-influencer like Titania (Jamila Jameel) to claim the title of “She-Hulk” for herself and her empire. To drive the message home, Titania wore head-to-toe green, like a custom forest green Christian Siriano gown for her personal appearance with a “She-Hulk Beauty” pop-up and all her power shoulder OTT pants.
“This body of Titania is trying to steal She-Hulk’s identity – everything she was wearing before the courtroom scene was green, to show that it was her. Real She-Hulk,'” says Foley, who for inspiration, to Instagram and “Selling Sunset” as a “Selling” star influence and “threw a huge deep” on the Kardashians, who Foley.
Foley praised Jamil’s willingness to lean into the comedic side of Titania’s costume: “She had no fear, especially when she was trying to add things like boot pads – there was a really funny moment in one of the earlier episodes, where you literally see her fall off at one point and everything about Titania is fake.” You will understand.
