Saint Antonio – San Antonio organizations are wrapping up National Men’s Health Week ahead of Father’s Day with programs targeting wellness and fatherhood.
“It’s important that we’re here to provide the resources for them…combined with something they love, like basketball,” said Kali Gower, senior director of lifestyle health at the Walzem Family YMCA.
“From the jump…we learned to be strong. Don’t cry, don’t complain…all those narratives create barriers to them seeking better health and better wealth,” said Julius Hunter, San Antonio Metro Health Program Coordinator.
Metro Health Partners also uses this event as an opportunity to remember the prevalence of diabetes in Bixar County.
“Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in Bexar County. “One in seven adult residents has diabetes,” Hunter explained.
Rafael Johnson, of San Antonio, said he is participating in the health fair as part of basketball.
“It’s a lifelong learning experience. We need to continue to do these things to promote health across generations,” Johnson shared.
In the city center, the San Antonio Fatherhood Campaign The group used Saturday morning to promote men’s safety at its 23rd annual “Father’s Day Fiesta,” which honored 20 men for their commitment to fatherhood.
“We understand issues of systemic harm and oppression and what we’re doing here … is celebrating the men of our community on this special holiday,” said Sam Gomez, campaign manager for Fatherhood of San Antonio.
Ultimately, social activists hope that men in the community will take the initiative to lead themselves and their families.
