Actress Sonam Kapoor has been making headlines ever since she appeared at the coronation concert of Britain’s King Charles III. Pictures and videos of the actress’ performance at the concert have been doing the rounds on social media, often inviting criticism from certain people regarding her choice of attire for the grand event. Many even went so far as to say that her dress looked like a “bedclothes”. Now a fashion blogger has come out to defend the actress, detailing the “unique story” of the chintz print fabric on Sonam’s crown dress in her post.
A fashion blogger named Aamir Ali Shah, in a detailed post, took a dig at the actress and asked, “What’s so unusual about the gown?” Sharing a picture of Sonam Kapoor in a gorgeous gown, Aamir wrote, “Read the comments below this photo Sonam Kapoor saying something unusual in this. It looks like a bed sheet. It’s the ‘chintz’ prints that are commonly used now. Bed sheets, curtains and textiles. They came as noise on the Coromandel coast of India.
The blogger explains the fabric’s history and says: “Before Europe came to demand these prints, a plain weave glossy cotton fabric was printed or painted with colorful dyes and sold over seas for decades.” Europeans were selling. Indian designs featured plants and animals that painted their homes in beautiful crazy and indigo colors, which were often gray and cloudy compared to the weather outside. Even the cotton produced by the ‘Hehens and Pagans’ caused riots. Colonial enterprises banned cotton from India, leading to imitations of chintz in the Netherlands, England and France. It was then that the patterns and designs were gradually developed. To show the birds and plants of Europe”.
The Defender continued, “Some scholars believe that the use of chintz for clothing began when maids gave her old or damaged household textiles, which they turned into dresses. Many lawns use these prints in Pakistan today, and many do not. Knowledge of the unique history of this fabric now wears Sonam Kapoor, Deepthi Sasidharan and Suzanne Thomas from Across the Border ‘It’s a full-circle moment’. The cloth that was stolen from the indigenous people is being reclaimed and repurposed here.”
The fashion blogger’s post caught the attention of actress Sonam Kapoor herself, who responded to the beautifully shot caption, “Thank you for getting the whole point across. Anamika designed the print.”
