New robotic technology allows surgeons to personalize total knee and total hip replacement procedures for each patient.
Biddeford, Maine – Health Care of Southern Maine (SMHC) is the first hospital in MaineHealth to give Mako Smartrobotics™. This development of joint replacement surgery is now an option for hip or knee replacement patients at SMHC – expanding the minimally invasive surgery program offered at the hospital.
Mako Smartrobotics™ combines state-of-the-art robotic technology with 3D CT-based planning and data analysis to provide a new option for total hip replacement, total knee replacement and partial knee replacement.
“The Mako 3D CT allows me to create a plan based on each patient’s anatomy before entering the operating room,” he said. Jeff Bush, MD. “During surgery, I confirm that plan and make the necessary adjustments while guiding the robotic arm to execute that plan. Precision joint replacement of the robotic arm is a step forward. We can perform this surgery in a minimally invasive approach with less soft tissue damage and more bone preservation. Knee and total hip replacement. It is exciting to be able to offer this transformative technology in a joint replacement service line to perform replacements.
Mako Smartrobotics TM for joint replacement is a treatment option designed to relieve pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis, which has not yet gone into other areas. During the operation, the surgeon uses the robotic arm to perform the operation and guide the implant site.
“We are proud to be the first hospital in the MaineHealth system to offer this state-of-the-art SmartroboticsTM technology,” he said. Nathan Howell, President, SMHC. “Providing new technologies like this will help us achieve our vision of working together to make our communities the healthiest in America by providing the best technology here in York County.”
