Saint Anthony – An engineering team at Southwest Research Institute hopes their latest invention will help solve some of San Antonio’s infrastructure and mobility challenges.
The engineers designed a self-driving wheel equipped with sensors, cameras and special software.
“We’re trying to integrate everything we’ve created into this transit to show off,” said Alex Youngs, a research engineer at the Southwest Research Institute.
Engineers have been working on the shuttle for more than a year, incorporating technology the facility has developed over the years.
“We have laser-rotating lidars. And we have cameras that show pedestrians, cars and other obstacles in our way,” Youngs said.
According to Young, the shuttle is designed to drive special routes around the facility.
Every time the wheel is on the road, it collects data.
“That data shows us areas where we can make improvements and what’s working well,” Youngs said.

The wheel is programmed to detect moving objects such as bicycles and pedestrians.
Engineers believe the shuttle could help the community in many ways.
“These types of mobility services can help people with disabilities, seniors and any underserved community,” Youngs said.
Young said we will continue to see this technology in vehicles and are excited to be a part of the project.
“I love being a part of such a dynamic and growing industry,” Youngs said.
