BLOOMINGDALE – Health technology students at Jefferson County Community College have a new virtual learning tool with the addition of an anatomy table in their lab.

Instructor Tammy Sismondo said the $71,000 desk arrived at the end of school this past spring, but it will benefit students entering the health care field this term. The 6-foot-long table features a dual-touch screen that provides students with a 3-D view of various anatomy and operating system functions of the human body.

We got the table through a gift from the Mary Jane Brooks charity Simondo said. “It brings the academy to life. We can do lectures and lab assessments and students can see how they look in the real body.”

Her 28 juniors and seniors continue to be able to perform more than 1,300 clinical cases, from brain aneurysms to tumors, as well as X-rays and autopsies. The table has pictures of animals used to teach in the small animal science program, and questions and games are included. JVS officials have acquired a large television screen to project images and the equipment includes a curriculum to aid learning.

Sismondo, who thanked the Steubenville-based foundation for its contribution, said the table will help students learn about the health technology program using a realistic, state-of-the-art approach.

“Advancing their education is amazing. It’s different from a book because it shows the body in 3D.” Sismondo continued. I’m excited to find it because it’s a great tool for students to use as they learn foundational skills. It’s a great surgical technology tool and students are great with technology and always work together.
