Hawaii Convention Center

The Hawaii Convention Center has announced new communications enhancements to improve the guest experience at meetings and events. AT&T 5G is now live at the hub, providing consumers with faster speeds and more immersive experiences for hybrid events, telepresence, augmented reality, video streaming services, digital conference badges and more for entertainment and productivity applications.

Terry Orton, general manager of the center, which is managed by ASM Global, said, “5G is a great mobile technology that will help transform consumer and business experiences at the Hawaii Convention Center. Now connect organizers, visitors and staff to plan event layouts, live stream keynote remarks, or pay for mobile concessions. You can access content faster than ever before.”

In addition to increasing data speeds compared to previous generations of wireless technology, AT&T 5G also reduces latency. Latency is the time between sending and receiving data. For deals, this means smoother communication, less latency. AT&T 5G users will automatically benefit from the improved service while at the hub.

Meanwhile, public safety at the center now has access to new wireless and two-way radio communication capabilities. FirstNet®, developed by AT&T—the only network in America built for first responders—is on a mission to connect first responders with the critical information they need to stay ready. With FirstNet, first responders can chat, text, send pictures and broadcast video in the center to help improve their situational experience.

A new public safety-distributed antenna system (DAS) radio network was installed in partnership with Boingo Wireless, the Hawaii Convention Center’s communications provider. Also known as the Emergency Responder Radio Communications System, the DAS network provides a public safety radio station for all first responder communications across a 1.1 million square foot facility. This radio network provides additional security coverage for guests and ensures best-in-class public safety measures at the center. Boingo also upgraded the two-way radio system at the center with four dedicated channels for security and operations teams.

“The safety of our guests, employees and community is our top priority,” Orton said. “We are excited to upgrade our wireless infrastructure to better facilitate first responder communications.”

During the COVID-19 outbreak, the center is working closely with the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) to implement forward-thinking health and safety protocols. The center serves as a temporary public shelter during hurricanes and other emergencies, is the HTA’s hub for communicating with the visitor industry during statewide emergencies, and hosts liaison activities with federal, state and city partners. Help.

Boingo’s Chief Business Officer, Michael J. “5G wireless technologies are the backbone of advanced, intelligent spaces. Boingo is proud to play our part in designing, launching and managing a fast, seamless and resilient communications infrastructure.
