MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Michigan Tech football team played to a scoreless tie against offensive juggernaut No. 22 Northern Michigan on Friday night in the Superdome.
The Huskies move to 3-5-3 overall and 1-3-3 in the GLIAC, while the Wildcats are 7-1-3 overall and 4-1-2 in the loop.
The tournament is the first time the Wildcats have been shutout this season.
“Another amazing result, we are moving in the right direction and our women are getting better with each and every training session,” said head coach Bulut Ozturk. “Gracie is becoming a player and continues to keep us in the game.
“It’s a collective defensive effort, we’re committed to defense and our girls pride themselves on their clean sheet. We’re still an improving team and we’re working hard to get ready for the conference tournament.”
The Huskies started the game with a bang, earning their first corner kick in the first minutes of the contest. Sophomore Julia Pietila had a shot on goal minutes later, but the Wildcats’ keeper was able to save the ball.
The best sight of the night was defender Cassie Boniface’s free kick that went wide in the 43rd minute.
Meanwhile, NMU’s offensive presence continues, making three shots on the Huskies goal. However, the Spring Lake native saw no threat in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Northern Michigan showed some of the best scoring in the nation. The Wildcats had 10 shots in the second half, six of which went on target. Jordan Noble was the only Husky to score in the final 45 minutes.
As has been the theme for most of the season, the Black and Gold’s all-out defensive effort gave the Huskies a clean sheet to complete the third contest of a three-game road trip.
Senior goalkeeper Gracie VanLangevelde had her fifth shutout of the season and had six saves on the night.
The Huskies open a four-game homestand Friday (Oct. 7) welcoming No. 6 Houghton. Friday’s match serves as a community night with local football clubs CCSA and HFC in competition.
