Tech student-athletes close impressive semester in classroom – Athletics – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets


Plates – Georgia Tech student-athletes have put together an impressive semester in the classroom this spring, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.08 for the recently concluded spring semester.

The Yellow Jackets’ 3.08 grade point average is the ninth time in the last 10 semesters that a Tech student-athlete has accumulated a GPA of 3.0 or higher, marking a 7% improvement over the fall semester.

“Congratulations to our student-athletes for their excellent performance in the classroom this past semester,” said Georgia Tech’s athletic director. I would also like to thank our coaches and our wonderful academic support team for everything they do to help our student-athletes succeed in the classroom.”

Ten Georgia Tech 13 programs* — baseball, men’s cross country/track and field, women’s cross country/track and field, golf, softball, men’s swimming and diving, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and volleyball — had teams in the spring. Semester 3.0 or higher, led by women’s tennis (3.66 – highest overall team GPA) and golf (3.34 – highest men’s team GPA).

In addition, 10 teams – baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s cross country/track and field, women’s cross country/track and field, soccer, men’s swimming and diving, women’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and volleyball – have their teams. They improved their GPA starting in the fall semester, led by football (down 24%), men’s basketball (up 10%) and women’s basketball (down 8%).

Individually, 64% of Tech student-athletes accumulated a 3.0 GPA or higher in the spring semester, and 50% earned a Dean’s List or Faculty Honor Roll award. The Yellow Jackets’ first-year student-athletes had a combined 3.11 GPA in the spring semester.

Georgia Tech student-athletes continue to achieve great academic success by pursuing valuable, yet challenging, majors, with 86 percent of 399 student-athletes majoring in engineering, business, science or computing in the spring semester.

Georgia Tech athletics boast a 91% graduation success rate in the most recent data provided by the NCAA. The 91% NCAA GSR is the highest mark for Tech, which had never recorded a GSR above 85% prior to 2016. The nine Yellow Jackets have 13 teams – men’s cross country/track and field, women’s cross country/track and field, soccer, golf, softball, men’s swimming and Diving, Women’s Swimming and Diving, Men’s Tennis and Volleyball – Individual team GSRs are equal to or higher than the national average in their respective sports.

* For purposes of academic reporting, Tech’s cross country/indoor track and field/outdoor track and field teams are combined as one men’s and one women’s program.
