COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – On Wednesday, the Texas A&M University Board of Regents voted to extend the May School of Business and Lease in Fort Worth during a public meeting at the Texas A&M University Memorial Student Center.

Construction of the May Business School Expansion, Business Education Complex project is scheduled to begin in September and is expected to be completed by October 2024. The project includes a four-story, 82,000-square-foot building and a “collaboration plaza,” located on Olsen Boulevard northeast of the Wiener Building. The total budget of the project is 84,197,309 dollars, which will be paid in various ways including donations.

The expansion of the May Business School will allow the university to offer better educational opportunities to students at all levels, said Duane Ireland, interim dean of the May Business School. The new building will include electronically wired hubs and collaborative spaces that are purposefully designed to encourage interaction between students, Ireland said.

“We’ll also have a cafe on the first floor,” Ireland said. “They will only have coffee and drinks, but this gives us an opportunity for individuals to meet, collaborate and exchange ideas. Students can sit down informally and talk about projects.”

Ireland said this is a great opportunity to equip Mays Business School students with the skills they need to survive in tomorrow’s business environment.

“We think this is an excellent demonstration of Texas A&M University’s commitment to educational excellence with the Mays School of Business,” Ireland said. “We think this demonstrates our school’s commitment to providing excellent educational opportunities for our students at all levels. In this case, these will be advanced learning opportunities through technology and face-to-face communication.

The Fort Worth lease expansion adds 10,630 square feet to the new University of Texas System offices at Burnett Plaza in downtown Fort Worth. Texas A&M system members such as Texas A&M AgriLife, Texas Emergency Management Division, Texas A&M Engineering, Mays School of Business, Tarleton State University and others will move into these new offices and be the first entities to join the Texas A&M University School. Law as part of expansion.

“This additional expansion will allow the Texas A&M University System to expand its presence in North Texas,” said Kim McCussion, associate vice chancellor and director of the Texas A&M University System’s Fort Worth campus. “By bringing more partner agencies and other researchers and industry partners all into one complex, we can ask some of the big questions we face.”

The expansion is part of the university’s vision to create an urban research campus in downtown Fort Worth called “Aggiland North.”

“The law school will move into the first two phases of what will soon be two buildings here,” McCuistion said. “The first building will be used for law in addition to the other academic programs offered there, and the second building will focus on research and innovation. There will be three buildings in total. The third building will be built after the current law school is demolished.”

Construction on the Law and Education Building is slated to begin in 2023 with funds from the Permanent University Fund. A research and innovation center is expected to be built at the same time.

During the meeting, regents voted to name the Highway 21 entrance to the Texas A&M RELLIS campus on Gus Grissom Boulevard after the late astronaut Virgil “Gus” Grissom.
