The Texas Tech Red Raiders may have lost to the No. 7 Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday in Stillwater, Okla., but at least coach Joey McGuire knew he had three legitimate options at quarterback.
The 41-31 setback allowed McGuire to get a tough look at third-string second-year quarterback Behren Morton, who got the unexpected start against Donovan Smith. Morton played valiantly on the road as he went 39 of 62 passing for 379 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
While sidelined by a knee injury suffered during the game, Morton still finished with 16 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown.
The Red Raiders are safe, but will have less than two weeks off before an Oct. 22 home opener against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
The team will look to return preseason starter Tyler Shaw, who was injured in the season opener against the Murray State Racers.
“Well, I hope we play all three against West Virginia,” McGuire said. “We’ve played all three games this year. There’s only been one game where we haven’t had two quarters.”
Smith, who led the Big 12 entering Saturday, was active against the Cowboys but has only played once as he continues to nurse a shoulder injury. Based on his performances this season, he seems to have hit the ground running.
However, Shaw’s experience and Morton’s game on Saturday will make it a difficult decision for McGuire.
“It’s going to be one of those deals that we’re going to have to deal with and everybody’s feeling a lot about health,” McGuire said. “… We’ll come to West Virginia and see which one gives us a chance to win.”
