Wonderful Mrs. Maisel It’s a unique show at its core. The show follows housewife Midge Maisel, a woman whose life is turned upside down by the decisions of those around her, and now there’s only one way to go: after what she wants. What happened to being a stand-up comedian at a time when society at large (late 1950s) was not acceptable.
Midge’s love for fashion is evident from the first episode to the last episode. The show won a 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Costume Design. Selected for advanced production design for narrative time or fantasy programming (one hour or longer). Donna Zakowska is the head of production design for each character in the show, and there are a few with very different styles. “I used to use paint to paint. [Midge’s] “Pay attention to the emotional landscape and the moments where she needs to be especially funny or brave or active,” Zakowska writes in her book. Crazy Wonder: The Amazing Mrs. Maisel’s Costumes.
It’s almost impossible to pick just a few fashion and costume moments from the show, but here are a few not only because they’re amazing, but because they’re significant to the character and her journey. Here are the most memorable ones.
8/8 Bedtime routine
Chapter 1, Part 1
Especially in the first season, how Midi was prepared to sleep with her husband speaks volumes about who she is and the worldview she’s been taught since childhood. It changes a bit as the season progresses as she waits for him to take off her make-up and wakes up before he goes to bed to be ‘perfect’. It’s a nice evolution for the character, which is seen in a very simple way and accompanied by beautiful clothes that are very popular in her time.
7/8 A working woman
Chapter 1, Episode 5
When Midge starts working as a makeup counter woman at B. Altman’s, she realizes that she knows a lot about makeup and is really good at it. Her uniform might not be the choice she would have made otherwise, but it’s still reminiscent of that era, and it’s pretty cool.
It was also an interesting look for the character, which he hadn’t done before, having only worn high-end clothes until now. It was one of the first times Midge was truly independent and understood what that entailed. Her uniform can often be overlooked, but it is an important symbol of character and time.
6/8 A true patriot
Chapter 3, Part 1
There’s no denying that a stand-up comedian knows how to dress to impress. It was no different when Mige went to talk to a soldier. Her use of the United States flag in various parts of her outfit creates a fun and original look that complements not only her image but her performance as well. This choice gave her a sense of patriotism without being boring or ugly. It’s such a part of her character that when the audience sees her perform in this outfit, it’s hard to imagine her wearing anything else.
5/8 Time for revenge
Chapter 4, Part 1
Midge’s clothes correspond directly to how she feels. So, she rants about revenge and how it’s unfair that her career is ruined, in a big way Wonderful Mrs. Maisel A show stopper, she simply couldn’t wear a pastel blue dress. Instead, she wore a black dress and pants that accentuated her mood. Miji takes a tour with Afar and regrets everything she dreamed of. There’s a seriousness to her fashion choices that enhances the character’s new voice and new plot line.
4/8 Rose entrance
Chapter 1, Part 1
It’s very important when viewers see a midget for the first time. Her outfit had to convey everything that was important to her: class, fashion, and most importantly, it had to catch everyone’s eye. Her pink-on-pink collection is a wonderful way to introduce this special feature. The fact that she wears many different pink dresses every season says a lot about what she likes when it comes to fashion.
3/8 Catskills fashion
Chapter 2, Section 4
Midge used some incredible outfits while spending the summer at a resort in the Catskills with her family and ex-husband. It is good to see the character in a more relaxed and informal outfit, many pastel colors, but very thoughtful and attractive. Midge loves to color code her accessories, and the collections at Summer Resort are some of her best. It is almost impossible to choose only one dress from this section.
2/8 Red Yom Kippur dress
Chapter 1, Part 2
Midi is heartbroken after her husband confesses to his affair with the writer. After all that happened, her mother decided not to accept Midje’s in-laws for a holiday dinner. At her mother’s insistence, she wears a beautiful red dress that looks perfect for the occasion, and that’s why she wears it. Not all of the night’s plans work (most don’t), but Midi wore one of the prettiest outfits the show has seen so far.
1/8 First class as Mrs. Maisel
Chapter 1, Episode 8
A black Givenchy Breakfast at Tiffany’s inspired dress must be great. By the end of the first season, Midge was banned from every comedy club except the Gaslight. She dresses beautifully and calls herself Mrs. Maisel on stage for the first time. The only thing that can be called classic in the performance is her outfit, when she tells a story about calling a girl scout because she doesn’t have the cookies she wants. Among other extremely funny yet inappropriate jokes. It was an outfit that showed how much she embraced herself, not letting go of labels like ‘housewife’ or ‘funny’ and allowing herself to be her true self.
