BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – October marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Brazos County Health District’s first ever Breast Cancer Memorial Day.
The memorial honors those lost to breast cancer, honors survivors, and benefits free resources. Attendees decorated a small pink flag with their loved one’s name displayed on the BCHD grounds.
Breast cancer survivor Andrea Farrar shares her story and attends Texas C-Step to sign up eligible women for free breast cancer screenings.
Brazos County Health District Health Director Santos Navarrete said the memorial is an educational event to spread breast cancer awareness.
“There can be more awareness for any kind of disease, there should be more awareness,” Navarrete said. “We hope to partner with other organizations in Brazos County to get people out on the front lines to get the word out about breast cancer awareness.”
Navarrete said the Brazos County Health District plans to hold the event for years to come.
“We want to form those partnerships and collaborate with the community,” Navarrete said. “As a public health agency, we want to ensure that we protect, promote and protect public health.”
