In their infancy, corporate HR departments hired and fired employees and ensured that employees received their salaries on time.

But the profession has taken on great importance in recent years, with the HR executive becoming an important strategic leader, recruiting, hiring and developing employees who shape the company’s destiny.

“HR has become a strategic function with increasing demands on professionals. They have a powerful voice in the intentional direction and growth of an organization,” said Meghan Hanrahan, executive director of the business school’s MS programs.

“They need more skills to meet the challenge,” she said. “Certainly, they need to be strategic thinkers, but they need to be able to deal with the challenges that the pandemic presents and the dynamic nature of work today. The field of HR is now at the forefront of societal changes affecting people’s work. More than ever, HR is the heartbeat of business.”

As the profession grows, so does the demand for graduate education. The School of Business is now preparing to launch a fully online graduate degree in Human Resource Management starting in Fall 2023. Applications are now available.

This will be the fourth offering in the highly successful program, in which about 2/3 of its students receive a major raise or promotion before completing their degree.

Students also have the option of a hybrid program with monthly classes; A short, certificate program and dual MBA/HRM degree.

Academic Director Professor Travis Grosser said: “Our HR program is now in its eighth year at the Business School and we have had a lot of success. “We want to expand the scope of our impact. Even if you don’t live in Connecticut, you can find this highly respected program. We’re excited to share our expertise with a wider audience.”

Not all business schools offer advanced human resources degrees, Grosser says.

“We have a high-level program with intensive innovation as a result of listening to our corporate partners and their needs,” he said. “We have a deep understanding of business, and our faculty have the research and evidence to guide our teaching. We also have top experts in the field who have completed primary education.

The program’s distinguished faculty are Professor John Mathieu, a national expert on team effectiveness, and Professor Greg Reilly, head of the School’s Department of Management and Entrepreneurship. Adjunct faculty have come from corporate giants such as Merck, Microsoft, and Raytheon Technologies.

The program caters to candidates from senior executives to mid-level managers looking to make a career change. Typically, the program accepts about 40 students each year. Admission is offered for the fall semester only. The national average salary for an HR manager is over $120,000.

“Students today are looking for degrees that are flexible, viable and business-relevant,” says Harahan. “This is an exciting program and very much in line with the future direction of the business school.”
