LEWISTON, Maine (WMTW) – A civil trial is underway against the owner of a former cremation business in Lewiston.
The family is suing the Lewiston-based business of Kenneth Kinser for $5 million, saying Kinser’s actions were “despicable and disgraceful.”
Last year, 11 bodies were found in non-refrigerated cremation solutions.
Although the defense does not deny Kinser and the company is guilty, they ask for forgiveness and understanding.
“Even though Kinser didn’t go to work, he told his part-timers – ‘Keep picking up dead bodies.’ We need the money,” said Merrill Pullin, a lawyer representing the families.
“What happened here is not excusable, nor is it appropriate. Affordable Cremation Solutions is not here to make excuses or excuses,” said Jim Haddow, attorney for Kenneth Kinser.
Kinser is listed as a possible witness in the case, but it is unclear when he will take the stand.
Members of the State Funeral Services Board voted unanimously last September to suspend his license for ten years.
He was cited for several violations, including disrespectful treatment of human body parts.
Testimony will continue Thursday.
