The Florida Department of Health in Leon County encourages residents to get current flu shots.

Tallahassee, Fla. — The Florida Department of Health in Leon County (DOH Leon) is encouraging residents to protect themselves, their loved ones and those around them by getting a flu shot. Individuals are advised to get their flu shot as soon as possible and definitely by the end of October for the 2022-23 flu season.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Between October 1, 2021 and June 11, 2022, it estimates between nine million and 13 million flu cases and between 5,000 and 14,000 flu-related deaths. For Florida flu statistics, please visit the department Florida flu review website.

“Remember we’re in flu season, flu shots are available at various locations in Leon County,” he said. Brandi Knight, MPH, DOH Leon Health Officer. “As always, we encourage everyone to practice our tried-and-true flu prevention strategies: wash your hands often, stay home if you’re sick, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough and sneeze.”

The flu vaccine is recommended for people six months of age and older, including pregnant women. Individuals most at risk of getting sick with the flu are young children, pregnant women, people with certain chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, or lung disease, and people age 65 and older.

It takes approximately two weeks for your body to become immune to the flu. The CDC recommends getting a flu shot every year because flu viruses change quickly and last year’s vaccine may not protect against the current year’s strain. Although the vaccine does not completely protect against the flu, it can reduce the severity of symptoms and the risk of complications.

Doh Leon is now offering free flu shots to children ages 6 months to 18 years. Vaccines for children program. DOH-Leon offers adult flu shots for $32.15 and high-dose flu shots for $73.15. Vaccinations are available by appointment only. The Department of Health accepts most private insurance with no additional co-pays. However, those with insurance are encouraged to get their vaccinations through primary care providers, urgent care centers, community health centers or a local pharmacy.

Call (850) 404-6388 to schedule an appointment.

People with the flu often experience some or all of these symptoms:

  • Fever* – It should be noted that not all people with the flu will have a fever
  • Cough
  • sore throat
  • mucus or nose
  • Muscle or body pain
  • Headache
  • Chilling
  • tiredness (very tired)
  • Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting

Most people recover from the flu on their own, but if you belong to a high-risk group and have flu-like symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who has the flu, your healthcare provider may recommend that you take an antiviral medication. Precaution.
