Roanoke, Va. – The Hispanic community in Star City continues to grow and it is important for them to be aware of the health resources in their area.

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, local health professionals have organized a health fair to help the community get out and learn about some of the health care issues in the region.

Yomali Henriquez is the coordinator of Spanish-speaking patients at the Bradley Free Clinic. She says it’s important for people in the health care system to be able to communicate and understand the Hispanic community and their culture.

“It’s very important because sometimes when we go to get some services and some resources, we need someone who speaks Spanish and understands what your culture is and what your situation is,” Henriquez said.

More than a dozen stalls and organizations were present at the event.

“When we know these cultures and these situations, we try to help and accommodate more people. It’s important that we have people in Roanoke who can help the Spanish people,” Henriquez said.

The plan is for next year’s event to be even bigger with more local businesses being invited.
