WASHINGTON (AP) – Millions of people in the United States will be exempt from health care costs next year after signing a law that extends generous subsidies for people who buy plans in the federal and state marketplaces.

“I expected a very tough conversation with people to explain why their wages are going up,” said Cariano, a policy expert at the Virginia Poverty Law Center.
But the approval of the “Inflation Reduction Act” canceled these concerns.
Things don’t get worse for individuals who buy coverage through the marketplace, he said.
The bill would temporarily extend subsidies offered last year when Congress and Biden signed off on the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief bill, which would have reduced premiums and out-of-pocket costs for customers buying plans through the Affordable Care Act’s marketplace. It also reduces spending for many individuals and families living well above the poverty line.
Only Democrats supported the extended health care subsidies and other proposals in the legislation Biadan signed Tuesday. Republicans criticized the move as a big government move that would fuel inflation. In reality, economists say, the math does little to dampen or extinguish the flames of inflation.
According to an analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation, health insurance premiums in the marketplace are expected to increase significantly over the next year — about 10 percent. “Generally speaking, people shouldn’t see an increase in their wages,” Cox said.
People who bought plans on the state marketplace saved an average of $700 in premiums this year from subsidies, according to estimates from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
As costs continue to fall, more people signed up for coverage last year and the number of people without health insurance fell to an all-time low of 8 percent in August, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. In California, many of the 1.7 million people who buy health insurance through Covered California, the state-run insurance marketplace, will continue to see savings of between $29 and $324 a month, depending on their income level.
State officials say about 220,000 people will be saved from losing coverage. Between 2 million and 3 million people in California may turn to the state marketplace if they lose coverage through Medicaid when the federal government’s Covid-19 public health emergency ends. About 15 million people in the United States had their Medicaid coverage extended during the outbreak.
According to Joseph Poindexter, senior director of health insurance programs at Healthcare Access Maryland, the biggest factor in whether or not someone signs up for coverage is cost.
Some parents, for example, enroll their children in Medicaid but skip buying coverage for themselves, he said.
“It’s sad to see people who say they’re going to give up treatment or not go to the doctor,” Poindexter said.
Fewer people had to do that calculation with subsidies, Poindexter said, adding that the lower rates were due to a 9% increase in new enrollees in the state last year.
