HERSHEY, Pa. – Penn State is offering a new online master’s degree program focusing on public health.
of Teacher of public health It is a 42-credit program aimed at developing public health knowledge and skills in leadership, program management, public health systems, communication and evidence-based.
Students will learn how to use critical thinking to explain the global impact of health determinants, create and analyze connections that can be used to justify social justice and human rights principles in public health policies and programs, and more.
Applications for Spring 2023 are being accepted through the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS).
A new offer based on the residential program
The Master of Public Health is offered online through the Penn State World Campus in partnership with the Penn State College of Medicine. The program is accredited by the Public Health Council, an independent agency that evaluates public health programs.
Christine Sznajder and Julie Lentes are part of the Penn State College of Medicine faculty team that teaches students enrolled in residence and online.
Sznajder said the low student-to-faculty ratio in the courses allows students the interaction and time they deserve in an academic health institution with international opportunities. She added that it is important to broaden international perspectives and reach through online learning.
“We are very pleased that the program is available to students through the World Campus, as this opens the door to student interaction from around the world,” Sznajder said. “By offering a Penn State MPH degree on a global campus, we are better positioned to meet student and workforce needs in the public health professions.”
The online master’s program was launched amid growing demand for workers in the public health sector. Jobs in health education and community health occupations are expected to increase by 17 percent by 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
A growing field
Sznajder and Lentes said the program is suitable for recent bachelor’s degree graduates and anyone in the middle of their career. The skills developed in this program enhance the skill sets of not only health professionals, but also those working in the government, nonprofit, social services, and education sectors.
Program graduates can become project managers, data analysts, research specialists, and community organizers and go on to serve in the Peace Corps.
“There’s a lot of focus on global health and connectivity in our community. As we look at this development, we see that global health is affecting many different sectors,” said Lentus.
Coursework that prepares students for success
Coursework in the Master of Public Health includes 18 credits of core courses, nine credits of international health track courses, nine elective credits, a three-credit internship, and a three-credit concluding major. The program can be completed in two years.
According to Lencho, a student’s capstone is often related to an internship and provides professional experience.
The College of Medicine has various partnerships both domestically and internationally, which provide internship opportunities for students around the world.
“Expanding the Penn State MPH program to the Penn State World Campus will both meet student needs and align with global priorities,” Sznajder said.
