JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – The Ole Miss School of Business and the University of Mississippi Medical Center teamed up for a conference on healthcare innovation Tuesday. They say the access to new ideas and economic opportunities to improve patient outcomes is a win-win for the state.
The conference served as a platform to innovate new ways to improve the way you receive care and lead a new healthcare-related business.
“As physicians, we need to look outside our own box and maybe take advice from people from civil engineering, like our providers today, or as a parent with some practical experience on the ground. Maybe a well-intentioned mom or dad,” explained Dr. Christine Kelly Leitch.
Former State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs, “The Future of Health Care Delivery Technology: Do We Need Physicians?” He was a participant in the discussion.
“Who has an Apple Watch? Or even your Apple phone? So, there are things you can do right now to personalize your health, which is promising,” asked Dr. Thomas Dobbs, dean of UMMC’s John D. Bower School of Public Health. But this is very dangerous because people don’t really know what it means when they see it.
The information documents at your fingertips or at your fingertips will only expand your expectations.
“It’s also important to communicate with a health professional who knows how to interpret it, because a lot of the information you get can be confusing, scary, useless, but it can also be true.” “Really, really important,” Dobbs added. “So, you know, using that not as an adjunct but as a substitute for, you know, your health care provider, your doctor, your NP is really what’s important.”
Such innovation represents an opportunity in the business sector.
“If you talk to entrepreneurs, there’s a lot of work out there,” said Dr. Paul Johnson, associate dean of the University of Mississippi School of Business. “So apps, for example, you know people are using these wearable technologies.”
Other talks included ways to improve the diversity of the nursing workforce in the state and how to create a better workforce pipeline.
