Moving away from minimalism, fashion has been seeing more and more designers lately, especially in handbags. Following the recent launch of Balenciaga’s trash bag-shaped bag and JW Anderson’s 3D-printed pigeon clutch, we’ve rounded up the most outrageous styles to be seen in recent times. Our list includes Louis Vuitton’s Color Chan bag in six color stripes and Tom Brown’s lobster-shaped bag, as well as pieces from labels like Solitude Studio and Grace Ling.

PRICE 1,790 US dollars

Although it looks like a garbage bag, this bag by Balenciaga is made of calfskin leather (hence the high price). Arriving in black, blue, yellow and white options, the design – first unveiled on Demna’s Apocalyptic Fall/Winter 2022 runway – is complete with subtle logo branding on the front. It’s no surprise that a brand like Balenciaga is releasing a trash bag-like design that costs around $2,000 — the pink tote bag went up to $1,490 in 2019. After the recent release of the trash bag, the style will no doubt be seen on Instagram. And it’s already labeled “Success.” But realistically, would you invest $1,790 in something that could be mistaken for an actual plastic garbage bag?

This Grace Ling bag is probably one of the more practical designs on this list. The shoulder bag has two zippered openings on each side, making it (slightly) easier to find your wallet or phone inside. The fine edges add a touch of high fashion to an otherwise spacious everyday bag.

This dove-shaped clutch was first featured on JW Anderson’s FW22 runway alongside other designs such as corduroy winged dresses and cutouts from interlocking rubber wristbands. The 3D-printed bag comes with an opening on the side just below the dove’s wing, and is complete with JW Anderson branding on the interior. While this bag isn’t obviously made to carry your essentials, it’s sure to make a statement at fashion week.
PRICE 2,360 US dollars
Rating: 6/10
Designed by Virgil Abloh, this bag resembles a paint can with Louis Vuitton’s monogram printed on it. Offered in a variety of colors – purple, yellow, green, orange, red and blue – the crossbody bag made its debut on the Louis Vuitton FW22 menswear runway, a celebration of the late designer. According to the product description, the paint can is “roomy enough to hold two phones and other personal items.” Certainly more practical than a dove clutch, this bag adds a sense of playfulness to any look.
PRICE £335 GBP (approx $390 USD) for the Essence Oilskin Bag, £890 GBP (approx $1,036 USD) for the Seaweed Bag
Rating: 8/10
Copenhagen-based Solitude Studios creates knitwear, handbags and more from locally sourced materials. The label’s made-to-order Essence Oilskin Bag and Seaweed Bag use leftover yarns purchased from textile companies. The former is water resistant and finished with a silver strap created in collaboration with artist ZWYRTECH, while the latter is the perfect surrealist to add to your ride.
PRICE 3,290 US dollars
Rating: 7/10
Lobster-shaped backpacks, anyone? Thom Browne’s $3,290 bag is made entirely of grain leather, with a crustacean shape and comes in all black. Covered in Thom Browne-style blue-and-red stripes, the design features adjustable bag straps. This editor gives this bag a 7 out of 10 for its fun shape and somewhat practical design.
