TORONTO, June 22, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — TELUS Health today released its monthly mental health data, which found that employees who collaborate with others have better mental health outcomes than those who work independently. The index showed more than one in four managers reported experiencing team conflict last year, but this month, worker mental health in Canada reached near-epidemic levels.

As workers in Canada continue to experience poor mental health, the overall Mental Health Index score remained at 64.6 for the second month in a row.

Collaboration supports improved mental health in the workplace

  • Nearly two in five (38 percent) of those surveyed have jobs that require them to collaborate with others all the time. This group has the highest mental health score (66.3), three points higher than workers who do not need to collaborate with others (63.3).

  • One in seven (13 percent) workers surveyed do not need to collaborate with coworkers.

  • About three-quarters (73 percent) of employees describe a positive experience working with colleagues; This group has the highest mental health score (68.0), nearly 22 points higher than workers with negative experiences and three points higher than the national average (64.6).

Compared to when the outbreak began, workers said they felt less supported.

  • One in five workers said they did not feel supported by their employers when it came to mental health at the start of the pandemic.

  • Mental health scores for employees who don’t feel as supported as they did during the pandemic are nearly 16 points lower than those who feel supported and 10 points below the national average.

  • Nearly four in five (77 percent) workers report that mental health and support levels are similar. Almost one in ten (8 per cent) had reduced levels of mental health and wellbeing support.

  • Eighteen percent of employees never felt supported. This group’s mental health score is 14 points below the national average.

About mental health index
The TELUS Health Survey was conducted from May 1 to 8, 2023 with 3,000 respondents across Canada via an online survey in English and French. All respondents lived in Canada and had been employed in the past six months. The data were statistically weighted to ensure that the regional and gender composition of the sample reflected this population.

The mental health index is based on a response system that then converts individual responses into point values. Higher score values ​​are associated with better mental health and less mental health risk. A score of 0 to 49 corresponds to low levels of stress, a score of 50 to 79 corresponds to low levels of stress and a score of 80 to 100 corresponds to good levels of mental health.
