United States Senator Michael Bennett has urged tech companies to label AI-generated content and track misleading content produced by artificial intelligence (AI).
In a June 29 letter sent to executives from major tech companies involved with AI, including ChatGPT Creator, OpNie, Microsoft, Meta, Twitter and Alphabet, Bennett urged users to be aware of when AI is being used to create content.
According to Bennett, false images have a disruptive effect on the economy and trust, especially in political matters.
“Continuing to produce and distribute AI-generated content without clear, easily understandable labels poses an unacceptable risk to public discourse and electoral integrity.”
The senator also said that while some companies are beginning to label some AI-generated content, the policies are “shockingly voluntary.”
In the letter, Bennett asks company executives to respond to questions by July 31 about standards for identifying AI-generated content, applying those standards, and the effect on infringement.
The only company to respond so far is Twitter, which is said to have responded with a voice emoji.

Similar fears of unlabeled AI content leading to misinformation have also been expressed by European lawmakers.
On June 5, the European Commission’s Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Vera Jurova, told the media that she believed companies deploying tools “with the potential to generate disinformation” should have tags on the content generated to stop the spread of disinformation.
Although the US currently has no comprehensive AI legislation, on June 8, US lawmakers introduced two bipartisan bills targeting transparency and innovation in the AI space.
One of the bills introduced by Democratic Senator Gary Peters and Republican Senators Mike Brown and James Lankford would require transparency from the government regarding its use of AI.
Another is that Bennett himself and Democrat Mark Warner, along with Republican Senator Todd Young, will establish an official Office of International Competition Analysis.
Bennett commented on the direction of instability in the crypto industry after the collapse of Signature Bank in March 2023.
