The Westland Commission gives the thumbs up to the proposed marijuana business

Westland’s quest to become a major destination for the marijuana industry took another step this month.

A third marijuana business, proposed on the north side of Cherry Hill, west of Newburgh, recently received a recommendation for a special land use and site plan from the city’s Planning Commission.

The business, an integrated facility with retail space for medicinal and recreational marijuana, will be on property adjacent to the Hush Haunted attraction and The Legendary Ax Bar.

“We’ve been working on this project for a while, we’re excited to put several million dollars into this project and I think we’re going to bring a first class building to the front of that project.” Paul Weisberger, one of the interviewers with LJA Holdings. “At our pre-busy level, we employ somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 to 100 workers.”

The building includes on-site retail, growing and processing operations. In order to comply, the development has several conditions the city wants to see approved as a proposed entity, including compliance with the city’s tree ordinance, submitting an odor control plan and more.

Another issue raised by Commissioner Diana Adams-Stachow was the location of handicap spaces on the proposed plan. The locations on the plan were too far from the door, and she said the facility would serve clients better if those locations were closer, noting that the facility dispenses medical marijuana.

“I’d suggest moving that handicap area … to the front of the building, where customers have short access to the front door closer to your entrance,” she said.

With a recommendation from the Planning Commission, the item now goes to the City Council for a final decision on the matter.

The marijuana business is the latest to be brought before the city’s Planning Commission. The city passed an ordinance several years ago that allowed a limited number of marijuana businesses, including one on the south side of Cherry Hill and another near Joy and Inkster.

That proximity has led some commissioners to question whether two businesses close together will affect business. Weisberger said he doesn’t believe they have a good relationship with the other company.

If anything, he said, it would give customers better options and encourage healthy competition.

“I think it will be a great experience from people looking for quality cannabis in the wider Westland area,” he said.
