5G will not only make India a technology user but also play an active role in technology development and implementation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while launching 5G services in the country on October 1.
Speaking at the sixth India Mobile Congress, Modi said that everyone from rural villages to laborers and the poor are stakeholders in the 5G experience and emphasized the nature of 5G, which is expected to reduce the technological and economic gap between rural and urban areas. Urban India.
He said that the technology will help to expand the financial system, increase productivity and bring about intensive development in all sections of the society. Addressing an audience that included Reliance Jio’s Mukesh Ambani, Bharti Airtel’s Sunil Bharti Mittal and Vodafone Idea’s Kumar Mangalam Birla, Modi said the SME industry should be given an opportunity to make hardware components for the telecom industry’s technological requirements.
According to the Prime Minister, 5G is a series of policy measures by the government that will significantly expand the technology resources. He said that currently, an average mobile internet user is using 14 GB of data per month. “In 2014, the price of 14 GB data was Rs 4,200 per month. Now, the same data is available at Rs 125-150,” said the Prime Minister.
“The aim of Digital India is to bring technologies to the people, both to work with them and for them. This is the vision of the country’s holistic development,” Modi emphasized. He pointed out that before 2014 there were 60 million broadband internet users and now it has reached more than 8 billion. Total internet connections have increased from just 20 million before 2014 to 850 million now, he added, adding that there are more connections in rural India.

More than 170,000 gram panchayats are connected with optical fiber compared to 100 gram panchayats before 2014, the Prime Minister said. He said the Modi government has decided to focus on four pillars in mobile phone manufacturing. The cost of devices, digital connectivity, the cost of data and above all, the mindset of a digital first thought process, he said.
Modi said India was now home to over 200 mobile manufacturing units, compared to just 2 before 2014. “India is now the second largest producer of mobile phones. Instead of importing 100 percent of our mobile phones, we are now exporting mobile phones,” he stressed.
Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that 5G services will bring fundamental change in many sectors like education, health, agriculture, logistics and banking. “Telecom is the foundation and gateway to Digital India. It is a medium for delivering digital services to the masses. Therefore, socio-economic development of the country needs a healthy and strong telecom sector, said Vaishnau.
Vaishnaw added that the government has made structural reforms by simplifying procedures. The average license in the telecom sector used to take more than 300 days, but today it is less than seven days.
A technological leap
India’s economy is expected to gain $455 billion between 2023 and 2040 as a direct result of 5G, according to the GSMA Association (GSMA), a global industry association representing more than 750 mobile network operators.
5G will be key to robotics, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, the drivers of the fourth industrial revolution. To take advantage of these key technology drivers, a series of innovative technologies using 5G were presented to the Prime Minister by local and international tech giants.
This includes smart metering of power connections to reduce transmission wastage, 5G-equipped ambulances developed by Airtel to provide remote tele-surgeries in rural hinterlands, and a smart manufacturing facility set up by Ericsson, among others. Modi remotely drives a vehicle in Sweden with an innovation pioneered by Qualcomm that brings transportation to hazardous areas without human intervention.
The Prime Minister saw a series of 5G use cases in the education and transport sectors proposed by the three major telecommunication service providers – Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone. He connected with a student from Uttar Pradesh through hologram technology.
India has become the fifth country after Finland, Sweden, South Korea and China to deploy an end-to-end ecosystem for 5G.
Billed as Asia’s largest telecom, media and technology forum, the four-day India Mobile Congress is jointly organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
