- Following Pelosi’s visit, China conducted military exercises near Taiwan.
A delegation of five US lawmakers landed in Taiwan less than two weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi traveled to the self-governing island democracy.
The delegation is led by Senator Ed Markey, Reuters reported. The trip is part of a larger tour to the Indo-Pacific region.
The U.S. Embassy in Taiwan said the delegation “will discuss with Taiwan’s top leaders U.S.-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, global supply chains, climate change and other important issues.”
Reuters quoted Markey’s office as saying the trip was to reaffirm US support for Taiwan.
Following Pelosi’s visit to Taipei, China conducted military exercises around Taiwan. China claims Taiwan as its own and has warned US officials against visiting the island.
