CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WIRE) – Health care workers are five times more likely to be assaulted in the workplace than any other industry, and most incidents go unreported, according to a new federal study.
UVA Health is trying to make sure its employees are safe.
“One thing we’re trying to do as part of our job is to increase the reporting of these incidents so we can support our team members. We’re all here to provide great care for patients, but it’s also important for our employees to feel safe in the workplace to provide that great care,” said Susan Jakiewicz of UVA Health. Violence against staff has escalated during the Covid-19 pandemic, and nearly half of nurses in a national survey say they’ve seen it at work.
To that end, UVA Health has created an initiative for healthcare workers.
“That committee has a variety of experts at UVA Health, but they also have a lot of front-line team members who are part of the committee so they can provide first-hand experience. They can provide first-hand advice about our interventions, and what works and what doesn’t work,” said nurse Ava Speschi. .
Its primary mission is to provide resources and training to employees on how to deal with workplace violence.
