Winchester, Va. (WHSV) – Valley Health System, now known as Elevance Health, has filed a lawsuit in Winchester Circuit Court against Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.
The lawsuit includes two counts:
- Breach of contract
- Violation of the Virginia Ethics and Fairness in Carrier Business Practices Act.
For two years, Valley Health has advocated for major reimbursement issues in Anthem, working in good faith to quietly resolve long delays in payment for health care services provided to its members.
“Anthem has given us no other option than to take legal action and recover the $11.4 million in contractual payments to our health system,” said Valley Health President and CEO Mark. Nantz
“We will continue to do our part to serve our community and ensure that patients have access to our health system’s providers and services. But Anthem, one of the nation’s largest health insurers and responsible for a large portion of Valley Health’s revenue — is aware of the detrimental effects of payment delays and, ultimately, our ability to maintain quality community health care.” “We need to have an impact,” Nantz said. “You, too, will not accept that our health system will withhold payments that limit our ability to deliver the care that our patients and their members pay for, expect and deserve. While we hope to resolve this quickly, we will also have to work with you to find a reasonable way to do this.” If we cannot, Valley Health reserves the right to provide notice of termination.
Valley Health is a not-for-profit health system serving more than 500,000 people in Virginia’s Northern Shenandoah Valley, West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle and Potomac Highlands, and Western Maryland.
The system includes six hospitals, more than 70 medical practices and urgent care centers, outpatient rehabilitation and fitness, medical transportation, long-term care and home health.
