In the year Founded in 2013 by four friends in NYC, womenswear label Vaquera has since evolved into a duo led by Patrick DiCaprio and Bryn Taubanse. The designers describe their aesthetic as “fashion fan-fiction” and in 2015 In 2020, he partnered with Dover Street Market to lend a helping hand in crafting and distribution.
For Fall/Winter 2022, Vaquera makes its Paris Fashion Week debut and alongside its collaboration with Vans presents a romantic affair adorned with whimsical ideas. Now, the brand returns to the PFW agenda to showcase its SS23 collection. Models stormed the halls of DSM’s Paris campus with psychedelic looks.
Vaquera’s recognizable rugged appeal arrived with clear allusions to the pirates of the Caribbean. These were paired with acid-washed (actually, soy-stained) cropped denim jackets, wide knee-length skirts, and metal corsets. Distressed but refined, buttons hang from clothes with soft teddy bears swaying from side to side. Satin ensembles ruffled at the hems and belted with swinging chain and pearls, stood next to muted dresses with jumbo-sized lapels, ruffles and a centerpiece ribbon. Rushed leather jackets, bras, bags and whips don’t add to the freebooter mentality.
At the same time, the two friends celebrated their home turf with a rebellious American flag dress made from flags taken from Long Island’s South Beach. The former, DiCaprio’s mother, echoed the same ensemble that was aired alongside a distressed wedding dress.
The Vaquera SS23 delivers the brand as we know and love it. Although they wanted to steer toward a more commercial line, the set saw DiCaprio and Taubensee at their best while staying true to their restless design energy.
