BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDJ) – The Virginia Tech-West Virginia rivalry goes back more than a century. The first meeting between the two on November 16, 1912 resulted in a 41-0 victory for the Hokies. Thursday night’s matchup will be the first time the two have met at Lane Stadium since 2004.

The return was not successful for the Hokies as West Virginia won 33-10.

But fans are excited to get into the game.

“It was a game you always looked forward to every year growing up,” WVU fan Michael Vass said.

“Especially because I’m young, it’s great to be back here again,” Virginia Tech senior Casey Branin said.

The coveted Black Diamond Trophy was on every fan’s mind as they prepared to head to Lane Stadium for the game on Tuesday afternoon.

“We’re ready to bring the Black Diamond Trophy to Blacksburg tonight,” said Virginia Tech alumnus Matt Pulley.

“It doesn’t matter what happens the rest of the season, you have to win this game,” Vass said.

For Mountaineer fans, there’s something about Lane Stadium that makes attending the game Thursday night a priority.

“My parents come to games here and they tell me a little bit about the atmosphere, I can’t wait to be there,” WVU fan Skylar Neal said.

Regardless of who they picked, the fans were happy that this rivalry could continue.

“Competition means more people, basically our neighborhood is competition. I’m glad to have him on the show and hope to see him again soon,” Pooley said.

That excitement was evident Thursday night when “Enter Sandman” registered on the campus seismograph.
