WASECA, Minn. (KEYC) – It will be almost four months before hemp-derived THC resins are legal in Minnesota.
At the cannabis processing plant in Waseca, they are preparing for the next step.
“The demand was going to be high, we just didn’t know how high it was going to be,” said Matt Little, partner/owner of Midwest Extraction Services.
The floodgates opened on July 1 when Minnesota legalized products containing THC derived from hemp. Some businesses, like Midwest Extraction Services, had the assembly line set up at the entrance long before the Legislature’s monumental decision.
“The problem is you can’t be very prepared because you don’t know what the rules are,” Little said. “You know the safety of the child and the locked thing, we had to wait. Thank God we had other industries like Taylor Corp or Labor Works nearby and within walking distance to get the child safety bags out quickly.
So they were prepared for legalization, but they were not prepared for what was to come.
“From a retail perspective, we’re doing about 50% more business than you know from distribution, 150% to 250% increase, I mean, it’s been crazy,” Little added.
But in an emerging market, calling consumers to your product needs to get people’s attention.
“You know, we’re listening to what the market wants and what the consumer wants, whether it’s a drink or a chocolate or a brownie, and they really like the drinks,” Little said.
But just putting a product on the shelf doesn’t mean it will sell, even if it’s legal in the near future.
“The product must taste good, it must look good, and above all, it must be affordable, which is easier said than done.”
